RELIGIOUS BODIES VITAL IN INFORMING PEOPLE ON SEXUAL REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

  Theologian and Scholar Rev Cliff NyekaNyeka has stated that religious Institutions in the country are a vital component in informing the mass on the issues to do with sexual reproductive health . NyekaNyeka made the remarks today at crossroads hotel in Lilongwe during a one day workshop organized by Young Voices an organization aimed at sensitizing the mass on issues of Public interest including sexual reproductive health. In his remarks NyekaNyeka said that religious bodies must provide accurate and authentic information that will include true reflections of issues to do with sexual reproductive health including clearing false perceptions associated with abortion. He further highlighted on the religious stance when it comes to abortion stating that all religious doctrines in the country condemn abortion but allows the practice when some exceptions have arisen for instance therapeutical reasons, eugenic reasons, rape, defilement and incest. CHAIMA BANDA LAUNCHES MANIFESTO

  One of the aspirants contesting for the Malawi Congress Party(MCP) Secretary General position at the Upcoming Party elective convention, Dr Chris Chaima Banda has today launched his Manifesto at the Party's headquarters in Lilongwe. Chaima who once served as Presedential advisor, urged delegates for the upcoming convention to elect him as party Secretary General . He stated that once elected, he will ensure Unity and transparency in the party as well as proper management of Party funds . Banda further stated that he is determined to becoming Party Secretary General at the upcoming elective Convention. He faces stiff Competition from the incumbent Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka, Incumbent Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda and Alex Major who are to battle it out for what is expected to be a very tough competition for the party's hot seat. LOSS TO THE FRATERNITY

  The Nollywood fraternity is mourning the loss of actor Obumneme Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, who succumbed to death on Wednesday the 10th of April 2024 after a boat he boarded capsized.  According to one of the survivors of the tragic incident, Pope was returning from a film scene shoot together with other film crew members who had just finished the shooting. It is then said that their speed boat crushed with a canoe and capsized. Pope and other four drowned whilst others amongst the crew managed to survive. After some time, divers came to rescue the others who went missing including Pope. Junior and others were found and rushed to the hospital where they were confirmed dead. Pope has died at the age of 39 and will be remembered as one of the greatest Nollywood actors to have ever emerged on the scene in recent years. Reported by Benjamin GK Nyirenda

MUSLIMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY COMMEMORATING EID UL FITR

  Maltitudes of Muslims in the country are today celebrating Eid Ul Fitr a day that marks the end of the holy month  Ramadan in the Islamic Calendar. In the Northern city of Mzuzu Muslims have gathered at Katoto ground to celebrate the end of the holy month  which is expected to bring joy and jubilation amongst Muslims in the North. In Mangochi, prayers marking the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan are underway at St Augustine 2 Primary School Ground while Other Muslims have also gathered at Mufti Abbas Center of Excellency. In Blantyre, Muslims have gathered at Kamuzu Upper stadium to perform the Eid Ul Fitr prayers where Nikah and other Islamic Functions Association chairperson, Ishmael Kazembe says the prayer is held under the theme 'What have we benefited from the Ramadan?' In Lilongwe the prayers are being held at Lilongwe Gold club. Eid ul-Fitr, also known as the "Festival of Breaking the Fast," is a significant religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide.

MULUZI CALLS FOR INTRA PARTY DEMOCRACY AMIDST ENDORSEMENT

United Democratic Front(UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has urged the party to practice Intra party democracy as well as uphold Democratic values prior to the 2025 general elections. Muluzi made these remarks on his Official Facebook page reacting to the party's decision to endorse him as a torchbearer for the party in the upcoming 2025 polls. In a statement he stated that his endorsement as UDF Presidential candidate in the upcoming elections is against the Democratic values of the Party as well as the country further saying that the endorsement subverts the party's authority for an elective convention.   Agricultural Policy expert Tamani Nkhono has stated that what farmers in the country are doing in selling their harvest prematurely is capable of only  solving the short term problem while creating a long term problem. Nkhono made the remarks whilst commenting on the rise in cases of farmers in the country selling their Maize harvest in desperation of dealing with the current economic hardships they are facing as well as hunger problems. He said: “It seems the farmers are not looking into the future. GOVERNMENT DISCLOSE FARM GATE PRICES

  Government through the Ministry of Agriculture has released prices for this year's purchase of farm produces which has seen Maize prices hike from K500 last year to K650 this year. In a letter released by the Ministry signed by Principal Secretary Dickxie Kampani, purchase of farm produces at a lower price than the set price tag is an offence and punishable by the law . With the new Farm gate prices among others, Shelled groundnuts will be purchased at K1200 per kilogram while unshelled groundnuts will be purchased at K800 per kilogram. Pure beans is set to be purchased at K1200 per Kilogram. CHARITY SHIELD PROCEEDS TO BE INVESTED IN EDUCATION SECTOR

  The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has disclosed that the revenue generated during the Charity Shield match between FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers played on the 30th of March 2024, will be channelled towards improving the Education sector in the country. In a press statement released  by the country's Football governing body , FAM realised a gross revenue of K88.4 million and K43.6 million net income during the match representing a   114% revenue increment higher than the K20.4 million raised in 2023 and the highest since the Charity Shield was introduced in 2016.  The Statement further states that these funds will be used to improve education facilities in the Central region of the country where NBS Bank and FAM technical implementing partners will construct sanitary facilities at yet to be identified primary schools. HIGH COURT REJECTS VP REQUEST

  The Lilongwe High Court yesterday snubbed Vice President Saulos Chilima's request to seek some of the disclosures from the State as evidence in the ongoing Corruption case he is answering. Presiding over the case Judge Redson Kapindu stated that it was premature for the defence in Vice President Saulos Chilima's corruption case to seek some of the disclosures from the State at this stage of the case and has also agreed with the Malawi Defence Force ( MDF) that some of the documents are indeed highly sensitive in nature to be made public. He further said that if during the trial such sensitive documents will prove to be relevant to a fair trial for the accused, then the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) will have to decide whether to have such sensitive information disclosed or discontinue the case. Chilima is being charged of receiving an undisclosed amount of money from businessman Zuneth Sattar to favour him in the awarding of government contracts.  Benjamin GK Nyirenda

KALINDO IN POLICE CUSTODY

  Police have yesterday the 2nd of April 2024 arrested activist Bon Kalindo on allegations that he released  certain sensitive information capable of threatening National security. Malawi Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya has confirmed about the arrest and has since stated that the accused will soon appear before Court. VP CASE RESUMES

  The High Court in Lilongwe is today expected to give it's ruling on the request made by Vice President Saulos Chilima to let Malawi Defense Force submit letters to act as evidence in a corruption case he is answering. During the onset of the case , MDF had refused to submit letters of equipment purchase which they attributed to be sensitive information which can expose the country to defense risks once submitted and exposed . But lawyers representing Vice President Chilima had submitted a request to the court to let MDF submit these letters for this was to ensure fair trial in the case . PARTIES MUST TAKE CAUTION WHEN ENTERING IN ALLIANCES

  Political analyst George Chaima has urged political parties in the country to exercise caution before venturing into alliances prior to the upcoming 2025 polls. Chaima made these remarks when he was reacting on Alliance for Democracy's (AFORD) sentiments on its alliance  stance ahead of the 2025 elections. He further stated that parties should make sure to have clear terms, conditions as well as viable Manifestos before venturing into alliances with other parties to avoid Misunderstandings .
