LACK OF CONTESTING ASPIRANTS IN PLU STUDENT UNION ELECTIONS

The upcoming Pentecostal Life University Student Union Elections is facing lack of contesting aspirants to per take in the Elections, a development which turns out to be very risky to the Democratic nature of an Institution but also leads to the  ushering of  incompetent leaders in Office .

A recent research by the Sight Media Group at the Institution shows that each and every position in the upcoming Student Union elections has only one Aspiring Candidate without Competitors meaning to say that  If the Elections are to take place, these candidates will win the elections by default without any Competition something which is not healthy to a Political and Democratic surrounding and  a series of engagements with Students at the Institution has Indicated that Many Students don't want to Contest in various positions in the Elections because thay are afraid of loosing the Elections due to the strength of these other Aspirants .

Having more than one aspiring candidate in an election is important to  fostering a competitive and diverse political environment. It allows voters to have a range of choices, promoting a healthy democracy where different perspectives, ideas, and solutions can be presented. Multiple candidates provide voters with the opportunity to assess various policy proposals and ideologies, encouraging a more informed and engaged electorate. Additionally, competition among candidates can stimulate debate, highlight key issues, and ultimately lead to better governance by holding elected officials accountable to the people they represent.

Reacting to  the matter Yohane Chideya a Lecturer in Media Law and Policies at the Institution says that lack of aspirants in the Elections clearly shows that Students are afraid to lead others, they may have a low self esteem and in some instances they see no benefit in Contesting but continued by saying that this is not a good  development because the Institution's Students may end up being led by people who are not capable of leading and urged Students at the Institution to come forward to Contest If they are to have a Student Union capable of delivering"So, to begin with, people show no interest in vying for positions. It could be fear to lead/anxiety, low self-esteem or they see no benefit for such. In so doing, you end up being led by people who are not capable of leading. So in turn it's not a guarantee that they will deliver and there is no one to challenge them. Basically that's what I can say" said Chideya .

With the campaign period currently running and the Polling dates yet to be announced, we wait to see if Students are going to come Forward and contest or if  it will be a clear pathway to  these other Aspirants.
