ERASTUS SHINES IN PLU CHESS TOURNAMENT

 



Erastus Chinunga a first year Student at Pentecostal Life University has emerged victorious in the inaugural PLU chess tournament which took place today at the Institution's Campus in Lilongwe.


The tournament which was sponsored by Mwale Chess Academy founded by the current National Chess Champion Joseph Mwale brought together 12 participants pursuing different programmes at the tertiary Institution.


Erastus Chinunga who defeated Collins Changaphanga in the Finals of the tournament said that he was very happy to have won the prestigious tournament citing his win to good preparation and hard work as key players in his win and further encouraged his fellow Students to venture into the sport of Chess to gain much needed exposure and knowledge.


In his remarks Francis Kankhwala who is the Central Region Chess League publicity Secretary described the tournament as a success stating that both participants showed resilience and hardwork in all rounds of the tournament despite the pressure they all faced .He then advocated for more Female participation in such tournaments after only one female participant took part in the tournament. Kankhwala continued by sayot that Mwale Chess Academy being an affiliate of Chess Association of Malawi has an objective of making Malawi a Chess playing nation by engaging students in tertiary Institutions to take part in Chess tournaments.


In his words  President of the Student Union at the Institution   Emmanuel Khenyemba described the tournament as a success and also disclosed their plans to incorporate Chess in the Upcoming Vice Chancellor's trophy games scheduled for later this month .


The tournament is an Inaugural Chess event to ever  grace the Institution.
