ZOMBA STADIUM SET TO BE COMPLETED THIS YEAR .

ZOMBA, Malawi - Construction of the long awaited Zomba Stadium is set to be completed later this year , reports Benjamin GK Nyirenda.

A visit to the site by Minister of Local government Richard Chimwendo Banda accompanied by Deputy Minister Owen Chomanika , Super league of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya , Zomba Central MP Bester Awali and  Zomba City Mayor Davie Maunde revealed that the project has been stalled for years now since it's commencement in 2017 and Managing Director of DEC construction company the contractor of the project has attributed this to delayed payments stating that" where there is money , there is progress ".

In his remarks Minister of Local government Richard Chimwendo Banda said that government is geared to see the completion of the long awaited Zomba Stadium and disclosed that the 4.8 biillion kwacha needed for the second phase of construction is available to ensure the project which started six years ago is finalised .

Banda further added that the absence of a stadium in the old Capital city is denying the residents of Zomba the fun of watching super league games within the confines of the city .

On the other hand SULOM president Fleetwood Haiya said that the absence of the stadium in the city is also affecting the performance of the city's super league team Red Lions FC .

Once completed , the facility will be home to Red Lions who currently hosts their home games at Balaka stadium and also boost the financial capacity of Zomba City council through gate revenues
